Vermont State Senator George Aiken on a visit to the region in 1949 said, "This is such beautiful country up here- it should be called the Northeast Kingdom." The former Vermont Governor is given credit for popularizing the name. Historical accounts say that Gov. Aiken was speaking before a development group at the Darling Inn on Depot Street in Lyndonville when he first used the phrase in a public forum.
